On Thursday, November 23, 2017, we celebrate Thanksgiving in the United States. Thanksgiving began as a day to celebrate the harvest of the year. It continues to be a day to celebrate and reflect with family and friends.
Where was the first Thanksgiving?
While there is some debate about whether the first celebrated Thanksgiving was in Plymouth, Massachusetts; Charles City County, Virginia; San Elizario, Texas; or Saint Augustine; Florida, we can all agree that Thanksgiving is a special holiday in the United States. Thanksgiving was first declared an American holiday in 1777. Abraham Lincoln declared the day National Holiday in 1863. However, it wasn’t until 1941, that Franklin D Roosevelt signed a resolution that Thanksgiving Day would be the fourth Thursday of November in America.
What are your favorite Thanksgiving dishes?
While most Americans will celebrate with turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, and pumpkin pie, we always find the regional favorites most interesting. We’ve heard of Thanksgiving tables with sauerkraut in Maryland, pasta dishes or antipasto plates in New York and New Jersey, frog eye or jello salad in the west coast, wild rice casserole in the midwest, mushroom gravy in the northwest, and pecan pie in the south. Any other favorites we’ve missed?
Whether you plan to watch the Thanksgiving Day parades, football games, annual dog shows, or simply spend time visiting with family and friends, we hope you have a wonderful day!
Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and… Giving Tuesday?
Do you plan to do your holiday shopping on Black Friday? Many Americans use the Friday after Thanksgiving to do much of their Christmas shopping. From Black Friday to Cyber Monday, remember to look for online sales and home shopping discounts from your favorite retailers. If you live in the Tampa Bay area, you can come visit us at Shopapalooza in South Straub Park in downtown St Petersburg on Saturday, 11/25/17 from 10am-5pm.
All of our items at heavendropt.org/shop/ have free shipping through the holidays. Each item is made using repurposed US Military parachute material used by our Armed Forces. Every purchase you make helps to provide meaningful jobs for people with disabilities.
#GivingTuesday was created to balance the hectic consumerism of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. On the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, communities and individuals come together to celebrate generosity and to give back.
Any donation to HEAVENDROPt on Tuesday, November 28, 2017, will fund care packages to send to American Troops.
You can also help by spreading the word and telling everyone you can about our Giving Tuesday project. Join us to be a part of a celebration of a new tradition of generosity!
